How did Alan Shepard start his Professional Career?
In 1944, Shepard started his naval career. As a gunnery officer, he was given the duty of steering the ship away from Japanese “kamikazes”. Shepard started receiving flight instruction at the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in 1946. He was able to get his naval navigator wings in 1947 after completing six landings on the USS Saipan.
Later, he became a member of Fighter Squadron 42 at the Naval Air Station and began his first assignment flying the Vought F4U Corsair. In 1950, he enrolled in the American Naval Test Pilot School. He flew his next mission with the VF-193 night fighter squadron.
He joined NASA and made history by being the first American to visit space. Shepard was the second person to visit space after Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin. President John F. Kennedy awarded him the NASA Distinguished Service Medal following the tragedy, designating him a national hero.
Shepard was considered to be the mission commander for Apollo 14, which achieved America’s third successful Moon landing in 1971. As a result, he became the fifth and oldest person to set foot on the moon.
